Goriška Brda is a wine-growing region in the far west of Slovenia, bordering the Italian Collio DOC across the Idrija river. The Brda landscape is defined by rolling hills covered in vineyards and fruit orchards, with medieval hilltop villages and stone-built farmhouses throughout. The region is best known for its white wines — particularly Rebula (Ribolla Gialla) and Pinot Grigio — and its proximity to the Italian wine estates of the Collio. Dobrovo, the main settlement, is home to the Renaissance Dobrovo Castle and the Brda winery cooperative. Šmartno is a preserved medieval walled village and one of the most photographed spots in Slovenia. Kozana and Medana are known for small family wine producers and agrotourism accommodation. Biljana lies in the upper reaches of the Brda hills, close to the Italian border.
